Semiotics: FOCUS = Texts may be "Open" or "Closed" He described a media text as a “galaxy of signifiers, not a structure of signifieds” meaning that the author cannot be said to have any real control over the interpretation of their texts. You could unravel a narrative from any viewpoint and then simply change angle to create an entirely different meaning. He actually developed 5 ‘Codes’ which are woven into the narrative which are very interesting and useful in media deconstruction, however, in his simplest form we know Barthes for his suggestion that texts may be either: Open (unravelled in a lot of different ways) or Closed (there is only one obvious thread to pull on) Comments are closed.
